During our visit to Ganeshgule, we took a short 20 minutes drive to explore the historic Purnagad Fort in Ratnagiri. Nestled amidst the serene beauty of the Konkan coast, the fort offered a perfect blend of history, nature, and stunning sea views. Travel isn't always about perfect weather and postcard moments. Sometimes, a destination leaves an impression because of the challenges it presents. Our visit to Purnagad Fort in Ratnagiri on a summer day was one such experience.
There is something magical about discovering places that are still untouched by crowds. While most travelers flock to the popular beaches and forts of Konkan, Purnagad quietly stands overlooking the Arabian Sea, guarding centuries of history and offering breathtaking coastal views.

Unlike some of Maharashtra's massive hill forts, Purnagad Fort has a simple charm. Built strategically near the creek and coastline, carrying centuries of history within its weathered walls. It once served as an important watchpoint against naval invasions. Walking through the ancient entrance, I was immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. There were no large tourist groups, no noisy vendors, just the sound of waves crashing in the distance and birds circling overhead.
One of the highlights of the fort is the panoramic view of the Arabian Sea and the surrounding creek. Looking out toward the Arabian Sea, you can see endless blue water stretching to the horizon. On one side lies the Purnagad creek, calmly winding its way inland, while lush green hills frame the landscape on the other.
Reaching Purnagad on a summer morning was an adventure in itself. By around 11 AM, the Konkan sun was already shining brightly, painting the landscape in vibrant shades of green and blue. The heat was intense, the bright sunlight reflected off the stone pathways and fort walls, making the surroundings feel even hotter. Finding shade was difficult, and every step under the open sky reminded us that visiting a coastal fort in the middle of summer requires preparation. The sea breeze offered occasional relief, but not enough to counter the midday temperature.
The fort itself is relatively small and can be explored within a short time, but the scorching weather slowed us down considerably.
It was difficult to fully enjoy the view for long, the heat and glare from the sun became overwhelming after a few minutes in the open. Instead of leisurely walking around and admiring every corner, we found ourselves constantly looking for shaded spots to pause and catch our breath. The strong sunlight made photography challenging, with the brightness often washing out the natural beauty of the landscape.
One thing to keep in mind before visiting the Fort is that food options are extremely limited. There is just one small stall near the entrance, serving simple refreshments like chilled sarbat and a hot plate of Maggi. Apart from this, there are no other eateries or shops in the vicinity. If you plan to spend some time exploring the fort and soaking in the coastal views, it is a good idea to carry your own water bottles and snacks. The fort's remote and peaceful setting is part of its charm, but it also means being prepared for a visit with minimal amenities.
Purnagad Fort may not be the most famous fort in Maharashtra, but it offers something equally valuable tranquility. Standing atop its ancient walls on a bright summer morning, with the Arabian Sea shimmering below, I felt far removed from the rush of everyday life.
While the fort itself was interesting and the views memorable, the harsh weather dominated the experience. Visiting during peak summer hours was not the best decision. The fort has limited shade, and the exposed pathways can become extremely hot. If you're planning a trip, choose cooler hours of the day, carry plenty of water, and be prepared for Konkan's unforgiving summer sun. An early morning visit around sunrise or a late afternoon visit closer to sunset would likely provide a much more enjoyable experience.
Purnagad Fort is undoubtedly a place worth visiting for its history, peaceful surroundings, and coastal views. However, timing makes a huge difference.
