Diveagar and Harihareshwar - Perfect Weekend Trip in Konkan

Diveagar, located on the western coast of India in Maharashtra's Raigad district, is one of the most beautiful and safest beaches in the Konkan region. Known for its long stretch of clean shoreline, swaying coconut and betel nut trees, and peaceful atmosphere, Diveagar has become a popular destination for travelers seeking a relaxing beach vacation away from the crowds.

We were looking for a quick two-day getaway before the summer vacation came to an end. The first three weeks of May had been packed with various summer camps and activities, leaving us with very little free time. Since there were no major plans during the last week of the month and our wedding anniversary was approaching, we decided to celebrate it with a short family trip on 29th May.

Considering the available time and driving distance, Diveagar and Harihareshwar seemed like the perfect choices. Both destinations are easily accessible from Pune and can be reached in about four to five hours by road, making them ideal for a weekend escape. The scenic drive through the Western Ghats and the Konkan countryside added to the excitement of the journey.

There was another special reason for choosing Diveagar. Aaravya was eager to visit the town because of its famous Suvarna Ganesh (Golden Ganesh) Temple. The temple's golden idol has a fascinating and dramatic history. The original idol was stolen during in March 2012, an incident that shocked devotees across Maharashtra. After years of effort and devotion from the local community, a new golden idol was installed and consecrated on the auspicious occasion of Angaraki Chaturthi on 23 November 2021. Ever since hearing about the temple's restoration, Aaravya had wanted to visit Diveagar.

With anniversary celebrations, beautiful beaches, a historic temple, and the promise of a relaxing coastal escape, our Konkan journey was off to a wonderful start.

Date – 29th May 2022

We began our journey at around 8:00 AM after enjoying breakfast at home. The drive to Diveagar was leisurely and enjoyable, with a few quick stops along the way, including one at Tamhini Ghat to buy fresh karvand (berry-sized wild fruits), a seasonal delicacy popular in the region. The road is generally in good condition, with only a couple of rough patches in the Tamhini Ghat section. After soaking in the scenic beauty of the route, we finally reached Diveagar at around 2:00 PM.

The route we followed was -

Pune → Paud → Tamhini Ghat → Mangaon → Mhasala → Diveaga

For travelers who prefer not to drive, Maharashtra State Transport (ST) buses provide a convenient option. A direct bus to Shivaji Chowk, Diveagar, departs from Swargate Bus Stand, Pune, at around 2:00 PM and reaches Diveagar by approximately 7:00 PM. The return bus leaves Diveagar early the next morning at around 5:30 AM, making it a practical choice for a short weekend getaway.

As we descended from the hills into the Konkan region, the landscape gradually transformed from misty mountains to coconut groves and coastal villages. The anticipation of spending the next two days by the sea only added to the excitement, making the drive feel much shorter than it actually was. By the time we arrived in Diveagar, we were ready to unwind and immerse ourselves in the relaxed coastal charm of this beautiful Konkan destination.

Somewhere at Tamhini Ghat

This was my second visit to Diveagar and third to Harihareshwar, two coastal gems of the Konkan region that never fail to impress. Having visited them before, I was already familiar with their tranquil beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and scenic beauty. Yet, there was a sense of excitement in returning, as every visit to the Konkan coast offers a unique experience.

Revisiting a destination often allows you to appreciate it from a different perspective. While my earlier trips were focused on exploring the attractions, this time the journey was more about slowing down, celebrating our wedding anniversary, and spending quality time with family. The familiar roads, the sight of swaying coconut palms, and the salty sea breeze brought back fond memories from our previous visits.

Harihareshwar, with its spiritual significance and dramatic coastline, and Diveagar, with its pristine beach and relaxed charm, make for a perfect combination for a short getaway from Pune. Despite having been there before, I was looking forward to rediscovering these destinations and creating new memories with my family, especially as this was Aaravya's first visit to see the famous Suvarna Ganesh Temple.

Sometimes, the joy of travel lies not just in visiting a new place but in returning to a beloved destination and experiencing its timeless charm all over again.

Since my in-laws were accompanying us on this trip, we had carried homemade food along with us. My father-in-law was on medication, and we did not want him to miss his meal timings during the journey. This gave us the flexibility to travel at our own pace without worrying about finding a suitable place to eat.

As the trip was planned just a day in advance, accommodation options were limited. We booked two rooms at Aai Resort, a place we were already familiar with from a previous visit. Our earlier stay there had been comfortable. However, since the booking was made at the last minute, all AC rooms had already been occupied, and we had to settle for non-AC rooms.

After checking in and relaxing for a while, we headed to Diveagar Beach at around 5:30 PM. The weather was pleasant, and the beach wore its usual calm and inviting look. We spent the evening enjoying the cool sea breeze, swimming in the Arabian Sea, and trying out a few water sports activities. Watching the waves roll onto the shore while the golden hues of the setting sun spread across the sky was a delightful experience. It was the perfect way to unwind after the long drive and a wonderful start to our anniversary getaway in the Konkan.

The beach is located about 10 to 15 minutes' walk from the resort, roughly a kilometer away. Even though it was a Sunday, the beach was not overwhelmingly crowded, though there were certainly more visitors than we had seen during our previous trip. The spacious shoreline ensured that it never felt congested, allowing everyone to enjoy the beach comfortably.

Diveagar Beach is known for its wide stretch of soft golden sand, clean surroundings, and relatively clear waters. A coastal road runs parallel to the beach, separating the shoreline from the rows of coconut and betel nut plantations that add to the area's charm. The vast expanse of the beach makes it ideal for leisurely walks, beach games, and simply soaking in the serene coastal atmosphere.

As expected for the end of summer, the weather was warm and slightly humid. Although the climate was not particularly pleasant during the afternoon, it was much more comfortable in the evening as the sea breeze picked up. The gentle waves, open shoreline, and beautiful coastal scenery more than made up for the summer heat. Watching families enjoy the beach, children playing in the sand, and the sun gradually descending towards the horizon created a relaxing and cheerful atmosphere.

We spent a wonderful evening swimming, enjoying the water sports, and unwinding by the sea. The sound of the waves and the cool breeze made for a perfect end to our first day in Diveagar, setting the tone for the rest of our Konkan getaway.

We returned to the resort at around 8:00 PM after a refreshing evening at the beach. Once we had freshened up, we spent some time exploring the resort premises and its peaceful surroundings. The courtyard had a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it the perfect place to relax after a long day. We enjoyed chatting with the resort owner as well as fellow travelers, exchanging stories and travel experiences while soaking in the laid-back coastal vibe of Diveagar.

Later, we had dinner at Aai Resort, the food was simple and fresh.

One useful tip for visitors to Diveagar is that many hotels, resorts, and traditional khanavals (local dining establishments) prepare meals based on prior requests. Therefore, if you plan to have lunch or dinner at a particular place, it is advisable to inform them in advance. This ensures that your meal is prepared on time and helps the hosts manage their arrangements efficiently, especially during weekends and holiday seasons.

Date – 30th May 2022

We started our day a little leisurely and got up around 7:00 AM, as we had no plans to visit the beach early in the morning. Instead, we decided to spend the morning exploring two of Diveagar's most important temples, Suvarna Ganesh Temple and Roop Narayan Temple, before heading to Harihareshwar. Since the Suvarna Ganesh Temple opens at 8:00 AM, we chose to visit Roop Narayan Temple first.

Located close to the beach, Roop Narayan Temple is an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Built from distinctive red laterite stone, the temple showcases beautiful traditional architecture and intricate craftsmanship. The highlight of the temple is the exquisitely carved black stone idol of Lord Vishnu. The sculpture is unique because it depicts all ten incarnations (Dashavatara) of Vishnu, arranged in a clockwise direction around the idol. Holding the Shankha (conch), Chakra (discus), Padma (lotus), and Gada (mace) in his four hands, the deity appears majestic and captivating.

There is a remarkable sense of peace within the temple premises. The quiet surroundings and spiritual atmosphere create a feeling of positivity and serenity that is difficult to describe. We spent a few moments admiring the intricate carvings and soaking in the calm ambience before continuing our exploration.

Adjacent to the temple stands another shrine dedicated to Lord Sundar Narayan. In front of the temple complex is a historic stepped well, beautifully constructed with stone steps leading down to the water. The well adds to the charm of the site and reflects the architectural ingenuity of the era in which it was built.

The beach is just a short walk away from the temple, making it a pleasant stop for visitors exploring Diveagar. However, the approach road to the temple is quite narrow, and parking space is limited. It is therefore advisable to park your vehicle on the main road and walk the remaining distance to the temple.

By the time we reached the Suvarna Ganesh Temple, its doors were just opening for the day. There is ample parking space available opposite the temple, we parked our car and walked towards the entrance. There was not much crowd, with only about 15 to 20 devotees waiting alongside us. As soon as we entered the temple premises, a sense of peace and positivity enveloped us. The calm surroundings and beautifully maintained complex created a truly divine atmosphere.

The temple derives its name from the golden idol of Lord Ganesha enshrined within it. The original temple housed a famous idol made of pure gold, which attracted devotees from far and wide. Unfortunately, in March 2012, the temple was the site of a shocking robbery in which the golden idol was stolen and two security guards lost their lives while protecting the shrine. Although the culprits were eventually apprehended, the original idol and ornaments had already been melted down. After years of efforts by devotees and the local community, a new golden idol, similar to the original one, was consecrated in November 2021, restoring the temple's glory and significance.

The reconstructed temple is beautifully designed, it provides a peaceful environment for devotees and visitors alike. Located approximately 1 km from Diveagar Beach, it is one of the town's most important landmarks and a must-visit attraction.

The history of the Suvarna Ganesh Temple is both fascinating and unique. On the auspicious day of Sankashti Chaturthi, 17 November 1997, a remarkable discovery was made in a coconut plantation in Diveagar. While cultivating the land, workers unearthed an ancient copper box buried beneath the soil. Covered in mud and bearing inscriptions in old Sanskrit, the box immediately attracted the attention of villagers and historians.

When the box was opened, it was found to contain a magnificent golden idol of Lord Ganesha along with several gold ornaments. The discovery created immense excitement throughout the region, and the deity came to be known as Suvarna Ganesh, meaning "Golden Ganesha." It is believed that the idol was around 400 years old, adding tremendous historical and cultural significance to the find. The discovery transformed Diveagar into an important pilgrimage destination, attracting devotees and tourists eager to witness this rare and extraordinary idol.

Standing in the temple that morning, listening to its incredible story and offering our prayers, we felt fortunate to witness a place where faith, history, and resilience come together so beautifully. The visit was particularly special for Aaravya, who had long wished to see the famed Suvarna Ganesh Temple after learning about the return of its golden idol.

The atmosphere inside the Suvarna Ganesh Temple was wonderfully calm, clean, and welcoming. Though the temple is not very large, it exudes a sense of peace and divinity that instantly puts visitors at ease. We spent nearly half an hour offering our prayers, admiring the beautiful surroundings, and soaking in the serene ambience before heading back to the resort.

Before leaving for the temple, we had placed an order for a traditional Konkani breakfast of ghavane and chutney at the resort. One thing visitors should keep in mind is that, unlike Pune, breakfast and tea stalls in Diveagar generally do not start operating very early in the morning. Most places begin serving food only after 9:00 AM, so planning accordingly can save you some waiting time.

By the time we returned to the resort, breakfast was ready and waiting for us. We were greeted with a plate of soft and fluffy ghavane, accompanied by a deliciously spicy chutney. The authentic Konkani flavors were simply delightful and instantly satisfied our taste buds. Every bite reflected the simplicity and freshness of coastal cuisine. To complete the meal, we were served a steaming cup of hot tea, making for a perfect start to the day.

Sitting in the peaceful surroundings of the resort, enjoying a traditional homemade-style breakfast after a spiritually uplifting temple visit, was one of the simple yet memorable moments of our Diveagar trip. It was the perfect blend of local culture, hospitality, and relaxation that makes Konkan getaways so special.

Our original plan was to visit Harihareshwar in the morning and return to Diveagar by noon for some rest before checking out. With that in mind, we had even pre-ordered lunch at the famous Bapat Khanaval, looking forward to a traditional vegetarian thali accompanied by delicious modak and refreshing solkadhi.

However, after considering the travel time, road conditions, and the intense afternoon summer heat, we decided to revise our plans. Instead of returning to Diveagar, we chose to continue our journey directly to Pune from Harihareshwar. Although the distance between Diveagar and Harihareshwar is only about 35 kilometers, the narrow and winding coastal roads make the journey slower than expected, often taking around one and a half hours.

After enjoying our authentic Konkani breakfast, we returned to our rooms, packed our bags, and completed the check-out formalities at the resort

Harihareshwar, a picturesque village in the Shrivardhan taluka of Raigad district, is one of Maharashtra's most revered pilgrimage destinations. Known for its ancient temples dedicated to Lord Harihareshwar (Shiva) and Kalbhairava, the town is often referred to as the "Dakshin Kashi" (Kashi of the South) because of its immense religious significance and spiritual heritage.

The Harihareshwar Temple is believed to be one of the region's oldest temples and held special importance for the Peshwas, the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire. The presiding deity of the temple was revered as the Kuladaivat (family deity) of the Peshwa family, making the shrine an important center of worship during the Maratha era.

One of the unique features of the temple is the famous Pradakshina Marg, a sacred circumambulatory route that passes around the temple and along the seashore, offering devotees a blend of spirituality and breathtaking natural beauty. This pathway is believed to have been developed by Chandrarao More, the ruler of Jawali, further adding to the temple's historical significance.

The temple has been visited by several prominent figures in Maratha history. Historical records mention that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj visited Harihareshwar in 1674, shortly after his coronation. Over the centuries, the temple faced damage from natural calamities and fires. It was later extensively renovated in 1723 under the patronage of Peshwa Bajirao I, who played a significant role in restoring the shrine to its former glory.

Nestled between the Arabian Sea and the lush green hills of the Konkan coast, Harihareshwar offers a unique combination of spirituality, history, and scenic beauty. Whether one visits to seek blessings, explore its rich past, or simply enjoy the serene coastal surroundings, the town leaves a lasting impression on every traveler.

The drive from Diveagar to Harihareshwar may not be the smoothest, as several stretches of the road are narrow and uneven, but the scenic coastal views make the journey thoroughly enjoyable. The route winds through Konkan villages, coconut groves, and stretches overlooking the Arabian Sea, offering plenty of opportunities to pause and admire the landscape. Along the way, we made a few stops to buy seasonal delights such as mangoes, karvand (wild berries), and jamun, adding a local flavor to our journey. Despite the road conditions, we reached Harihareshwar in about an hour.

By the time we arrived, the afternoon sun was blazing and the heat was quite intense. After parking the car, visitors need to walk a short distance to reach the temple complex. The approach involves a few steps and uneven sections at certain points, which can be challenging for elderly visitors or those with mobility issues.

Considering the weather and the amount of walking involved, my in-laws decided not to accompany us to the temple. Instead, they chose to relax at a nearby restaurant while the three of us continued towards the shrine. Although the walk was slightly tiring under the hot sun, our enthusiasm to visit the temple kept us going.

The Harihareshwar Temple stands out for its unique and attractive architecture, reflecting centuries of history and devotion. Inside the main sanctum, the deities Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, and Brahma are worshipped in the form of a sacred linga, making the shrine spiritually significant and distinct from many other temples in Maharashtra. Close to the main temple are two additional shrines dedicated to Lord Kalbhairav and Goddess Yogeshwari, both of which are considered an integral part of a visit to Harihareshwar.

Since it was a Monday, a day traditionally associated with Lord Shiva, there was a modest crowd of devotees at the temple. Several worshippers were performing abhishek and special poojas, yet the rush was quite manageable. We were able to have a peaceful darshan and seek blessings within 15 to 20 minutes.

After our temple visit, we walked towards the Pradakshina Path, one of Harihareshwar's most famous attractions. This sacred circumambulatory route runs around the temple hill and along the seashore, offering spectacular views of the Arabian Sea and the rocky Konkan coastline. We explored a portion of the path and spent some time enjoying the crashing waves, watching the high tides, and capturing photographs of the picturesque surroundings.

However, the afternoon sun was relentless, and the heat soon began to take its toll. Fortunately, there were a few sharbat stalls nearby serving refreshing drinks. A glass of chilled buttermilk turned out to be exactly what we needed and instantly revived our energy before continuing our exploration.

The Pradakshina Path is a unique experience, but visitors should always check the tide conditions before attempting it. The route passes very close to the sea and can become dangerous during periods of high tide. Coincidentally, the day of our visit was Amavasya (New Moon Day), when tidal activity is generally stronger than usual. As a precaution, the authorities had closed the complete pradakshina route. Although we could explore only part of it, the dramatic sea views and the sound of waves crashing against the rocks made the experience memorable nonetheless.

The blend of ancient temples, spiritual significance, rugged coastline, and breathtaking sea views makes Harihareshwar a destination that appeals equally to pilgrims, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers.

After spending about an hour at Harihareshwar Temple, we left the temple complex, did a little shopping for local products and souvenirs, and then returned to the spot where my in-laws had been waiting. By then, it was almost 12:30 PM, and all of us were looking forward to a wholesome vegetarian meal.

We made a few inquiries nearby and learned about Ashokvan, a place known for serving authentic pure-vegetarian Konkani food, located about a kilometer from the main parking area. Our original wish was to enjoy a traditional meal featuring modak, solkadhi, and rice bhakari, but we were informed that these specialties need to be ordered at least a day in advance.

While driving from Harihareshwar towards Diveagar/Mhasala, we spotted a signboard for "Ashokvan Pure Veg" on the left side of the road. The restaurant itself is situated a little away from the main road and can be easy to miss if you are not looking for the signboard. Visitors need to park their vehicles near the roadside board and take a short two-minute walk through the property to reach the dining area.

The place turned out to be a charming and traditional Konkani home-style establishment rather than a conventional restaurant. The setup was simple yet welcoming, offering a glimpse into the local way of life. Meals were served in a buffet arrangement, and the day's menu was neatly displayed on a board for visitors.

We arrived at around 12:40 PM, only to learn that lunch service begins sharp at 1:00 PM. Since we had a little time to spare, we wandered around their beautiful wadi (orchard). Surrounded by lush greenery, coconut trees, and the peaceful ambiance of rural Konkan, the wait hardly felt like a wait at all. The serene surroundings, coupled with the anticipation of enjoying a traditional Konkani meal, made the experience even more special.

Sometimes, it is these unexpected discoveries, a simple family-run eatery tucked away amidst nature, that become some of the most memorable parts of a journey. Ashokvan's rustic charm and tranquil setting offered a refreshing break from the heat and perfectly complemented our Harihareshwar visit.

As the clock struck 1:00 PM, the crowd at Ashokvan began to grow rapidly. It was evident that the place was a favorite among both locals and travelers who had come to enjoy an authentic Konkani meal. We soon joined the queue and settled down for lunch, eager to taste the food that everyone seemed to be raving about.

The meal turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Served in a simple, homely setting, the food had the unmistakable taste of a lovingly prepared home-cooked meal. The flavors were authentic and comforting, reflecting the essence of traditional Brahmani Konkani cuisine. Every dish was fresh, well-balanced, and delicious, making the meal thoroughly satisfying. We all enjoyed it immensely, and it was easy to understand why the place had earned such a good reputation among visitors.

Another pleasant surprise was the affordability. The restaurant offered unlimited meals for ₹200 per adult and ₹100 for children, making it excellent value for money considering the quality and variety of food served.

What makes Ashokvan Pure Veg special is not just the food but the entire experience. The rustic surroundings, the warm hospitality, the peaceful orchard setting, and the authentic homemade flavors come together to create a memorable dining experience. For anyone visiting Harihareshwar or traveling through the area, this place is highly recommended, especially for vegetarians looking to enjoy genuine Konkani cuisine.

If you are in or around Harihareshwar and appreciate simple, traditional, home-style food, Ashokvan is a must-visit destination. Sometimes the best meals are not found in luxurious restaurants but in humble places where food is prepared with care, and Ashokvan is a perfect example of that.

We were pleasantly surprised by how popular Ashokvan Pure Veg turned out to be. Although we knew it was well-regarded, we had not expected such a large crowd. Within just 15 minutes of lunch service beginning, nearly 20 people were waiting for a table, while around 40 to 50 guests were already enjoying their meals. The place fills up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays, so it is highly advisable to make a reservation a day in advance. If you wish to enjoy their special Modak, be sure to inform them beforehand, as it is prepared only on prior request.

After relishing the delicious meal and thoroughly satisfying our appetites, we spent a few minutes speaking with the hosts. Despite being extremely busy managing the growing crowd, arranging tables, and ensuring everyone was served promptly, they were warm and courteous. We made it a point to compliment them on the excellent food and their hospitality, both of which had made our dining experience truly memorable.

With our stomachs full and spirits refreshed, we finally bid farewell to Ashokvan and began our journey back to Pune at around 3:00 PM. The return drive through the scenic Konkan countryside and the winding roads of Tamhini Ghat was relaxing, though the journey was longer due to the holiday traffic. We took a refreshing tea break at Tamhini Ghat, enjoying the cool breeze and picturesque surroundings one last time before continuing our drive.

By the time we reached home, it was around 9:00 PM, bringing an end to a wonderful two-day getaway. What began as a simple anniversary escape turned into a memorable family vacation filled with beautiful landscapes, spiritual experiences, authentic Konkani cuisine, and precious moments with loved ones.
